Keep it Stylish this Festive Season!

While you feel the nip in the air and know that the weather is getting more pleasant, there is also another reason to rejoice as the festive season is here. From the festival of lights, Diwali that just went by we’re all looking forward to the wedding season that is just round the corner.

Dressing appropriately for different occasions can be quite challenging. You may always feel at risk of either being under dressed or on the contrary too overdressed. The key is in finding your own style and making it unique. My personal choice this festive season has been brocade. This fabric has the quality of giving an outfit a rich feel but doesn’t add bulk or wait that an Indian outfit with embroidery would have.

Here is a style guide to the festive season –

1.      Pick a color that suits you. Many times you will visit a store and really like something. But you need to ensure that the colors compliment you. I’ve selected an aubergine purple for this season. It goes well for an evening event as beautifully as it does for a day brunch. Make the lehenga richer by adding a border that compliments the top.

2.      The cut and silhouette is the next major choice. You know your body type the best. Wear what makes your comfortable. It is very unladylike to keep adjusting your top and your consciousness about your outfit will hamper you from having a good time. Find pieces that compliment your age as well, don’t blindly follow trends that may not work for you.

3.      The most exciting part after picking the right outfit is to accessorize. Festival wear translates into Indian wear for us and we have plenty of options to make even a simple outfit look glamorous. Add a bunch of bangles like I have, wear a statement neckpiece or/ and earrings (jhumkas). Even a maang tika is always in vogue. If you want to give a fusion vibe, add bracelets, a nice feminine watch, a string of pearls or/ and anklets.

4.      As women, we know how difficult it is to walk in heaving Indian clothes. So comfortable footwear is always a priority. Wedged heels do wonders as against pencil heels. If aesthetics is your thing, ensure that the grip of high heels is good so you can keep it stylish yet stay at ease. If it is an outdoor event, be careful as the heel may dig into the grass. Flats may also work if you’re in a Salwar Suit but with Lehengas and Sarees, heels are ideal.

5.      I prefer a straight hair, well blow-dried look. You can back-comb post the blow dry to add a little volume. If the event is indoors, you can let your hair open but if it is outdoors, be aware of the weather as your hair may start frizzing out. Keep a bun or a modern fishtail/ ponytail or plait your hair so it remains in control.

6.      A simple lehenga can do wonders. It becomes a solid base that can be dressed up by adding a heavy dupatta or capes that are in fashion these days.

Wishing all of you a happy and stylish festive season!
